INDIANAPOLIS

Master Sergeant Charles Hobert McDaniel was born on December 6, 1917 in Missouri growing up near Butler. He married Gladys Watts on November 9, 1943. He joined the United States Army in 1940 later serving as a medic with the 83rd Infantry Division in Europe through five campaigns in WWII. After leaving the Army in 1945, he worked in Whitesburg, KY as a truck driver for the coal mines. He re-enlisted in the Army in 1948 and was sent to Japan in 1949. There he served with the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was listed as MIA at the Battle of Unsan in North Korea on November 2, 1950. Though presumed dead his remains were not found for nearly 68 years until 55 boxes of remains were returned to the US by North Korea in July, 2018. A lone dog tag belonging to Master Sergeant Charles McDaniel ultimately led to the identification of his remains. Master Sergeant Charles McDaniel was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Letter V Device, Purple Heart, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Silver Star Attachment and the Combat Medical Badge 1st Award for his courageous service in WWII and the Korean War.

Master Sergeant Charles Hobert McDaniel is survived by his wife, Gladys (McDaniel) Machledt of Indianapolis, IN; sons, Charles H. (Karen) McDaniel, Jr. of Indianapolis, IN and Larry W. (Marsha) McDaniel of Jacksonville, FL; sister, Wilma Jean (John) Gutshall of Adrian, MO; grandchildren, Kristy (John) Nystrom and Angela (Phil) Christian of Indianapolis, IN, Emily McDaniel of La Jolla, CA, Josh McDaniel of Neptune Beach, FL and Amy (Adam) Reese of Jacksonville, FL; 11 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Ethel (Burke) McDaniel; sister, Dorothy Newcomb and brothers, Jewell and Warren McDaniel.

Funeral Services will be held, 12:00 PM, Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Community Church of Greenwood, 1477 W. Main Street, Greenwood, IN 46142 with visitation from 10:00 AM until the start of service. Military and Graveside Service will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, IN 46143.
