Man arrested after altercation with police

Sheriff’s deputies arrested an Indianapolis man early Monday morning after he fought with them during a routine traffic stop.

Jacob Yergler, 24, 2922 Kaskaskia Way, Indianapolis, was arrested on charges of operating under the influence and resisting law enforcement.

Deputies pulled Yergler over at 12:50 a.m. Monday for traveling 63 mph in a 40 mph zone near County Line Road and Leisure Lane in Greenwood, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Once deputies approached the vehicle and started talking with Yergler, they could smell alcohol. They asked him how much he had to drink and he told them three beers, the report said.

The deputies conducted three different field sobriety tests, all of which Yergler failed. A breathalyzer showed Yergler’s blood alcohol level to be 0.177, which is more than twice as high than the legal limit to drive of 0.08 percent.

When deputies attempted to place him in handcuffs, he tensed up, the report said.

Deputies forced Yergler to the ground, but he continued to twist and turn, according to the report. They hit him in the knee and continued to fight with him until they were able to detain him, the report said.

He continued to be verbally abusive once he was in handcuffs, deputies said.

One deputy received cuts and scrapes on both hands and knees, and had holes in uniform pants and damage to his boots.

Yergler’s passenger jumped out of the car at one point to urge him to calm down and cooperate, but deputies told him to get back in the car. When he didn’t listen, they threatened him with a taser, the report said. Eventually, he returned to the vehicle. He was not arrested.

Yergler is being held in the Johnson County jail on $2,200 bond.
