Voters place Republicans in open Edinburgh town council seats

Republicans secured the two seats on the Edinburgh Town Council.

Republicans Williams Jones and Marshall Ryan Piercefield were elected to the two open seats on the town council. Both candidates were up against Democrat and former town council president, Ron Hoffman, and independent candidate Don McQueen.

Votes were taken from Johnson, Shelby and Bartholomew counties, with both winning about 30 percent of votes.

Members of the Edinburgh Town Council are responsible for passing ordinances and resolutions, establishing salaries for town employees, passing an annual budget and setting utility rates.

They were elected by voters in the town of Edinburgh, which falls in parts of Johnson, Shelby and Bartholomew counties.

Jones was formerly on the Edinburgh school board and a town employee in the water department for 14 years. He wants to be a voice and representative for the town employees, he said.

"When certain questions are asked, being a former town employee, I know the answer to some without having to go to somebody else,” Jones said.

Piercefield, who was new to running for public office, previously worked as a Franklin firefighter for years. He saw the town council as another way to give back to his community.

Both town council members plan to focus on transparency with the taxpayers of Edinburgh. They want residents to feel welcome to address concerns with the council members.

“If you vote for me, I work for you,” Piercefield  said.
