County’s unemployment rate up

The number of Johnson’s County residents who are considered unemployed ticked up by more than 400 people last month.

In October, 445 more Johnson County residents were without jobs compared to September. The unemployment rate is about the same as it was this time last year.

In October, 2,491 local residents were unemployed, up from 2,046 in September.

That puts the unemployment rate at 3 percent for October, compared to a rate of 2.6 percent rate in October 2017, according to a report released this week by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The county ranks 20th in the state for percent of residents who have jobs, according to the report.

Tipton County, between Indianapolis and Kokomo, boasted the best unemployment rate in the state last month at 2.6 percent. Vermillion County, on the Illinois border, had the highest unemployment rate at 5.3 percent.

Indiana’s overall unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in October, up from 3 percent in September. The country’s unemployment rate was 3.5 percent in October.
