Southport athlete killed in Greenwood crash

A Southport High School student died in a car crash this weekend in Greenwood.

Rashawn Jermane Haskins, 18, was riding in the passenger seat of his 17-year-old girlfriend’s car about 10 p.m. on Saturday when she turned left onto Main Street in front of a vehicle traveling northbound on U.S. 31, said Matthew Fillenwarth, assistant chief of the Greenwood Police Department.

Another passenger believed to be Brianna Haskins, Rashawn Haskins’s sister, was in the backseat of that car, he said. All three were taken to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, where Haskins was pronounced dead. He was a senior at Southport High School.

He was not wearing a seatbelt, Fillenwarth said. The driver and backseat passenger are being treated for serious injuries, he said. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

Haskins was one of the top receivers on Southport High School’s football team, catching 65 passes for 755 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior this past season and earning Class 6A Senior All-State honors from the Indiana Football Coaches Association.

He had just been named a 2018 All-State football player by the Indiana Football Coaches Association this weekend.

“The Southport family lost Rashawn Haskins last night. He was an amazing man who overcame so much in his life,” Southport Football posted to Twitter on Sunday. “Rashawn you are loved and will be dearly missed. #flyhigh8.”

He had also previously played basketball for the Cardinals, making the varsity team as a sophomore.

He attended the school’s basketball game against Ben Davis High School at Southport before the crash Saturday night.

Perry Township Schools said in a statement grief counselors will be available this week to help students cope with the tragic loss.
