10-year-old boy struck by vehicle

A child hit by car while on a rural road this weekend remains in critical condition.

The boy, who will turn 11 on Christmas Day, remains at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, the hospital said on Monday afternoon.

He was standing next to his father’s vehicle parked on the side of the road at County Road 700 East near Division Road in far eastern Johnson County. A woman driving on the other side of the road reported seeing the vehicle stopped on the road near the intersection, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

As she passed the car, the boy walked into the southbound lane directly in her path and the front of her vehicle struck him, she told police. The woman told police she she may have been driving 50 miles per hour and did not have time to react when the boy walked in front of the car, the report said.

The accident happened just after 6 p.m.

The boy suffered serious injuries. He was taken to a local church where he was then flown by helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, the report said.
