One dead in crash that jammed traffic for miles

A fatal car crash on Interstate 65 in Greenwood coupled with heavy construction north of the crash site created a traffic jam for miles on Wednesday morning.

One person died in the crash, said John Perrine, a spokesman for Indiana State Police. The name of the driver was not being released Wednesday afternoon because extended family had not yet been notified.

The crash, which involved a semi, occurred about 7:30 a.m. on northbound I-65 near the Main Street exit.

Police shut down northbound lanes of the highway between Worthsville Road and Main Street during rush hour, forcing drivers heading into the city to find alternate routes.

“Investigators believe a semi tractor-trailer was stopped in the northbound lanes due to a lengthy traffic back-up. A 2015 Chevrolet passenger car struck the rear end of the semi’s trailer at a high rate of speed. The force of the impact caused the car to go underneath the back of the trailer,” an Indiana State Police news release said.

Traffic had already slowed early Wednesday morning as drivers crossed the county line due to a bridge repair at the Southport Road exit, about 4.5 miles from the crash site. Drivers were encouraged on Tuesday to avoid the area on Wednesday and plan alternate routes into the city from the south side.

The crash was cleaned up and the highway was reopened by 10 a.m., but state police are still investigating, the news release said.
