Growing southside business moving headquarters to Greenwood

A rapidly growing southside heating, cooling and plumbing company is moving its headquarters to Greenwood.

Peterman Heating, Cooling and Plumbing, which added about 40 employees to its small family business this year, plans to add another 60 jobs in the next five years, said Chad Peterman, a co-owner of the business and son of Pete Peterman, who started the business in 1986.

The average pay for those jobs will be $19.25 an hour, he said.

The business is currently located near Stop 11 Road and Emerson Avenue, just across the county line. But it is quickly outgrowing its facility.

Peterman has been working with Dana Monson of the Johnson County Development Corp. since last summer to find a location for its new headquarters.

The company plans to build a $2 million, 20,000 square-foot facility, including warehouse and office space, on a 3-acre lot at 370 Commerce Parkway, just east of the Interstate 65 and Main Street interchange, a growing industrial area.

The owners have already purchased the land for an estimated $300,000 and began construction plans.

The city’s redevelopment commission on Tuesday approved a five-year $112,000 tax break for the company. The company will still be responsible for about $74,000 in property taxes during those five years, which will flow into the city’s east side TIF, with no taxes paid the first year and an additional 20 percent paid each year of the abatement.

“This abatement is necessary to finance the project and allow us to build a large facility for growth and job creation,” Peterman said in its application.

Construction is expected to begin next summer and wrap up in March 2020, according to the application.

They expect about 120 employees will make the move with them, Chad Peterman said.

“We have seen unprecedented growth over the last year. Some (people) will come up to me and say, ‘Don’t plan on that growth every year.’ And I got to agree with them. I’m not planning on it. I can’t stop it,” Peterman said.

“We expect to continue to grow. Obviously with that, an expansion in our building is needed.
