Center Grove pool to cost $17 million

Construction will start in the spring on a new pool at Center Grove High School that will include room for more than 1,000 spectators and cost more than $17 million.

The school board this week hired Fanning/Howey Associates Inc. as the architect for the $17.6 million pool facility at the high school, which should be complete in April 2021.

The pool facility is part of a $45 million expansion project at the high school which is being paid pack by the district over the next 20 years with property tax dollars.

The facility will include an Olympic-size swimming pool, a zero-depth entry therapy pool, locker rooms and support spaces at the deck level, which include a classroom, storage room and areas for scorers and their equipment. Additionally, the new facility will have upper level spectator seating for up to 1,100 people, public restrooms, concessions, controlled access to the high school and site improvements in areas that connect the pool to the building, including sidewalks and entries, according to the agreement between Fanning/Howey and Center Grove.

Fanning/Howey, based in Indianapolis, will be paid 6.34 percent of the total construction cost.

Aquatic Design Services, a subcontractor who has been hired to help design the pools, will be paid $90,000. Center Grove is also paying Fanning/Howey $16,500 to seek bids for the actual construction of the project and $20,000 to secure the approval of various Johnson County agencies and departments.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring.

Fanning/Howey also designed Center Grove’s student activity center, a $10 million athletic facility which opened in February of 2018.

The school district has not yet hired an architect to modernize and add classrooms at the high school. New classrooms will include flexible furniture, new carpeting and walls and LED lights. Security will also be a priority, as the district aims to improve safety with security barriers, additional video surveillance, emergency messaging, door monitors and security screening.

“Center Grove is working with the architects and the construction manager to develop timelines for the project,” Center Grove spokesperson Stacy Conrad said.
