Search of river scaled back

Search crews have not been able to locate a possible drowning victim in the Big Blue River, even though water levels are down and the search has been more thorough, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.

The search effort has been scaled back, the DNR said in a news release during the weekend. Emergency workers will monitor and search the river as weather and water conditions allow, the news release said.

Police officers and firefighters from Johnson and Shelby counties have been searching for a person since Thursday evening, when two passers-by said they saw a man go into the water. No missing persons reports have been filed, and the DNR and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has been unable to determine who the victim might be.

On Saturday, crews were able to get in the water in some areas because the river level had dropped, but the river was still swift in many areas, the news release said.

Conservation officers said they were grateful to Edinburgh residents who came to the scene to provide food, water and encouragement.
