Some races hot, others still have no candidates

With less than four days left for major party candidates to file for a leadership position in city or town government, four offices still have no candidates and two don’t have enough to fill the number of seats available.

So far, only Greenwood, Franklin, Trafalgar and Bargersville residents will vote in the May primary election. Of 62 candidates so far, six are Democrat, and 56 are Republicans.

In some places, such as Edinburgh, Whiteland and New Whiteland, no candidates have come forward for some of those town offices. In other places, such as Greenwood, races are heating up.

Only one person has filed for any of the four seats in Edinburgh; three town council seats and the clerk-treasurer job is on the ballot. No one has filed for New Whiteland Town Council’s Ward 1 or 4 seats, or Whiteland Town Council’s Ward 3. And there aren’t enough candidates yet to fill all of the seats on the Trafalgar or Edinburgh town councils.

But in Greenwood, almost every race is contested. So far, seven candidates are seeking three at-large seats on the city council. Three candidates have filed for one District 1 seat, and two candidates have filed for Districts 2, 3 and 6, as well as two candidates for mayor.

Six candidates are running for three at-large seats on the Bargersville Town Council.

In Franklin, so far, there are three primary races: City court judge and Franklin City Council Districts 1 and 3. No Democrats have filed for any of the offices.

More than 50 seats are on the ballot this year. Voters will pick town and city council members, mayors and clerk-treasurers. The elected officials will serve four-year terms managing taxpayer money and making decisions about growing or shrinking government services and amenities, such as police and fire departments, trails or parks.

Major party candidates have until noon on Friday to file.

Once major party filing ends, county officials will have until May to prepare for the next election, when voters will choose one candidate from each major party for each slot on the November ballot. Voters will have to choose a Republican or Democrat ballot to vote in the primary.

If the primary races are uncontested for all seats in a city or town, then no primary election will be conducted and the candidates will automatically advance to the fall general election. The parties could slate candidates to fill vacancies on the ballot.

Candidates filing as Independents have until July.
