Former Greenwood councilman to serve jail time for voyeurism

A former Greenwood city council member accused of taking photos and videos of three women – two without their knowledge – will serve jail time.

Brent Corey, 36, 1873 Drexel Court, Greenwood, will spend the next two weekends in the Johnson County jail after he plead guilty Thursday to a felony charge of voyeurism. He will also serve a 1-year probation sentence, be required to undergo counseling and owes $185 in court fees, Johnson County Prosecutor Bradley Cooper said.

He was ordered to appear at the jail at 7 p.m. Friday, and will be released late Sunday. He will repeat that same jail time next weekend, which will satisfy his sentence, Cooper said.

“It was really unexpected. He came in, waived his initial hearing and said he wanted to plead guilty as charged, which he then proceeded to do. He was sentenced by the judge right there on the spot,” he said.

Cooper said it’s unusual for that to happen in a felony case, but it was the best case scenario because, had it gone to trial, he likely would have had to enter photos and videos of the women into evidence, which would have been made public.

“Now I can take all of that evidence – and there was a lot of photographic evidence – and destroy it. It protects those victims,” Cooper said.

Corey’s attorney Mike Kyle said the case was a result of a long-standing consensual affair.

“There were liberties in that relationship that, unfortunately, implicated a bystander. Brent has acknowledged his role and has been punished appropriately. Brent’s wife and children are working to forgive him as he atones for his actions. They are all working to rebuild the trust between them in this matter,” he said in a statement.

Corey was charged with voyeurism, a Level 6 felony, last month after police found evidence of at least three women being filmed or photographed naked at his home in Prince’s Lakes.

The recordings occurred in June of 2016 and were discovered in May 2018, according to court documents. The four videos are dated June 10, 2016, and show the women using Corey’s bathroom and changing clothes.

At least two of the three women seen in the photographs and videos said they were unaware they were being filmed in a bathroom and bedroom/changing room at Corey’s home, court documents said. The images capture them in a state of undress or using the restroom, the probable cause affidavit said.

An employee at Sizemore Insurance Agency discovered the photos and videos on a main computer at the business, behind the reception desk, which was not password protected, court documents said. The photos and videos were uploaded on May 14, 2018 to a shared server.

Corey formerly owned the insurance agency. He resigned from his post on the city council in August after the police investigation began. Greenwood police took the initial report but had Indiana State Police investigate to avoid any conflicts of interest, since he was a member of the city council.

He served as an at-large member of the city council and as a voting member of the city’s plan commission from 2008 to 2018.
