Honor those who made ultimate sacrifice at local Memorial Day services

<p>Your family can help put flags on graves, participate in walks or attend services to mark the Memorial Day holiday.</p><p>Here is a look at some Memorial Day events planned. </p><p><span>Memorial services at cemeteries in Greenwood</span></p><p>The Greenwood and Whiteland Veterans Of Foreign Wars and the Greenwood American Legion Posts will jointly sponsor their annual Memorial Service Program at cemeteries in Greenwood on May 25. </p><p>The honor guard will be included in each event which also includes an invocation, the setting of the wreath, rifle volley and taps. </p><p>Services will begin at 9 a.m. at Rocklane, followed by Greenwood at 9:30 a.m., Mount Pleasant at 10 a.m., Olive Branch at 10:30 a.m. and at Forest Lawn at 11 a.m.</p><p><span>Place flags on veteran’s graves</span></p><p>Franklin American Legion Post 205 needs volunteers to help place flags on veterans’ graves.</p><p>Several hundred veterans will be honored at 10 a.m. May 25 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin with taps and a rifle volley.</p><p>Volunteers are asked to help place flags on the graves of veterans buried at the cemetery.</p><p>Information: Bryon Thompson, 443-1183.</p><p><span>Grab a poppy</span></p><p>The Honor Guard at Greenwood VFW Post No. 5864 will be giving out poppies to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. </p><p>The guard will give out poppies to people visiting the graves of veterans at Forest Lawn Cemetery the entire weekend of Memorial Day, including the day itself.</p><p>May 24 has been declared &quot;Poppy Day&quot; in Edinburgh.</p><p>Edinburgh American Legion members will be at three tables around town May 24 to distribute poppies and solicit donations.</p><p><span>Poppy Drive</span></p><p>Greenwood VFW Post 5864 is looking for volunteers to help with the annual Poppy Drive.</p><p>The post needs volunteers to sell poppies at Tractor Supply in Greenwood a Tractor Supply on the southside, Rural King in Greenwood, Sam’s Club in Greenwood and Walmarts in Greenwood.</p><p>Funds from the poppy drive will go toward the post’s relief fund.</p><p>Call Sherri Jones at 253-278-1980 or e-mail her at <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a> to register to help.</p><p><span>Memorial Day Mile</span></p><p>A run and walk event is planned for Memorial Day.</p><p>The Memorial Day Mile starts at 9 a.m. May 27 at the courthouse square in Franklin.</p><p>Registration can be done at memorialdaymile.org</p><p><span>Place flags on Rocklane Cemetery</span></p><p>Greenwood VFW Post 5864 will host between 25 and 30 Boy and Girl Scouts from 8 a.m. to noon May 27 to place flags on veteran’s graves at Rocklane Cemetery and at two other cemeteries in White River Township.</p><p><span>Franklin Memorial Day service</span></p><p>The Franklin American Legion will host the annual courthouse service at 11 a.m. May 27 on the courthouse lawn.</p><p>The event will include a speaker followed by a pitch-in lunch at the legion, 1200 Park Ave., Franklin.</p>
