Man arrested on 4 felonies after chase in Greenwood

Greenwood police arrested an Indianapolis man on four felony charges after leading officers on a stolen vehicle pursuit in Greenwood late Thursday night.

Tory Lee Brawner, 47, of 4521 Yuma Drive, Indianapolis, was arrested on two charges of resisting law enforcement, and also charges of driving as a habitual traffic violator and auto theft, all at least Level 5 felonies. He also faces misdemeanor charges of operating under the influence of a controlled substance, leaving the scene of an accident, giving police a false identity, reckless driving. He was also wanted on a warrant for an unrelated Marion County case.

The events unfolded about 11:25 p.m. Thursday, when Johnson County 911 alerted the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office of a call involving a stolen white Ford truck. During the call, the owner of the truck, a Greenwood resident, alerted the dispatch center that there was a firearm in the vehicle, according to a police report.

A Greenwood police officer pursued the vehicle on State Road 135 near Meijer. The driver ran a red light and continued through the Meijer parking lot, hitting several curbs and a concrete pole. After the vehicle continued down 135, a sheriff’s deputy driving east on County Line Road saw the chase. The truck crashed into the curb and crosswalk sign pole at the intersection, according to the report.

After the crash, a man began running, despite a sheriff’s deputy’s orders. Officers caught him trying to climb a chain link fence, the report said.

Brawner gave multiple false identities, but officers found his identity by searching the birth date he gave them and finding a warrant for his arrest from Marion County. He told police he had been drinking and said he used cocaine earlier that night. The owner of the vehicle arrived at the scene and said he didn’t know Brawner, contradicting Brawner’s statement that the owner gave him permission to use the vehicle, according to the report.

Although Brawner refused medical treatment, he was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital for a blood draw. An officer was also taken to the hospital after he strained a calf muscle during the pursuit, according to the report.

Brawner is being held at the Johnson County Jail on $13,000 bond.
