Sheriff’s office searches overnight for suicidal man near Atterbury

The sheriff’s office spent hours Saturday night and Sunday morning searching for a missing man who was threatening to kill himself in southern Johnson County.

Deputies used several search methods, including K9s and drones, to search at Camp Atterbury and nearby Johnson County Park, focusing the search on clues from the man’s family and the location of his vehicle.

In the end, he was found uninjured.

A man called police about 11:30 p.m. Saturday to report that his cousin told him on Facebook messenger that he was going to kill himself, and was headed to Camp Atterbury to do it, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and Prince’s Lakes police swarmed the area searching for the man. They were given details about how he was planning to kill himself, the report said.

Deputies found the man’s truck in a parking lot on the grounds with a suicide note inside. They continued to search the area for hours, using K9s to search wildlife areas and drones to fly overhead. The sheriff’s office eventually called off the search about 4 a.m. Sunday, according to the report.

The man’s father found him about 8 a.m. Sunday and took him to his house, where he spoke with sheriff’s deputies. Deputies took the man to Community Hospital South for treatment.
