Franklin man given jail time in woman’s beating

A Franklin man was given just under two years in jail after he beat a woman multiple times over several hours, causing her and her children to flee from him twice.

Adrian Highsaw, 501 S. Morton St., was arrested and later charged with domestic battery, a Level 6 felony, and criminal mischief after the incident in April.

He pleaded guilty to domestic battery in the presence of a child and the criminal mischief charge was dropped as part of his plea, according to court documents.

Johnson County Circuit Court Judge Andrew S. Roesener sentenced him to 700 days in jail. He received 70 days credit for time he had already served in jail, court documents said.

The charge stems from an incident earlier this year when a woman reported that Highsaw had beaten her multiple times over one evening.

The woman told police that she and her three children were in the motel room where they were staying when Highsaw began punching and pushing her. The woman and her three children left the room and got into a vehicle. Highsaw jumped onto the hood of the vehicle and began punching it, according to a police report.

The children and woman slept in the vehicle for a few hours before returning to the motel, the report said.

Highsaw was in the room when the family returned. He punched her in the forehead and continued to punch and push her, according to the report.

The woman attempted to leave the motel room again when Highsaw stood in the doorway to prevent her from leaving. He then told the woman they could leave, but one of the children could not. The woman talked to Highsaw to distract him and held him back so the children could leave the room, the report said.

The family ran to the vehicle in an attempt to escape, but Highsaw followed them and jumped into the vehicle. The woman drove everyone to an acquaintance’s home, where the children went inside. The woman told police that Highsaw punched her so hard again at the acquaintance’s home that they both fell to the ground and Highsaw complained that his shoulder was out of socket.

Highsaw has a previous misdemeanor domestic battery conviction from June 2005, according to online court records.
