Drunk driver arrested on felony charge, woman remains in hospital

A Trafalgar man was arrested on a felony charge after he drove drunk and crashed into a SUV, causing the female driver of that vehicle serious injuries.

Joey Lee Allen Bolin, 22, 2257 West County Road 900 South, was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, a Level 6 felony.

The crash occurred just after 10 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of State Road 135 and County Road 300 South, just north of Trafalgar, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, they spotted the SUV facing south with severe damage and airbag deployment off the roadway at the northeast corner of the intersection, according to the report.

Bolin’s pickup truck was located about 30 feet north of the SUV off the roadway in a field, the report said.

The driver of the SUV told deputies she was in severe pain, including back pain, her ankle was injured and she could not walk. She said she was driving home from work, traveling north on State Road 135, when a truck cut her off and she crashed into it, according to the report.

She was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where she was in stable condition Wednesday, a hospital spokesperson said.

A Trafalgar police officer approached the truck in the field and found Bolin passed out in the driver’s seat, the sheriff’s office report said. As deputies approached the truck, they noticed several beer cans scattered in the field, more in the back of the truck and a half-empty bottle of whiskey, the report said.

Deputies could smell alcohol on Bolin’s breath, and he had vomit down the front of his shirt, they said. Bolin told them he had 12 or 14 beers throughout the day and was headed home to Brown County, the report said. He also had bloodshot eyes, deputies said.

Bolin failed multiple field sobriety tests, according to the report.

Deputies took him to Johnson Memorial Health for a blood draw before taking him to the Johnson County jail, where he is being held on $1,200 bond.
