Man arrested after spitting, yelling at people in hospital, grabbing deputy

Johnson County sheriff’s deputies arrested an Edinburgh man early Monday after a deputy said he spit, cursed and yelled at people in Johnson Memorial Hospital, and later resisted arrest.

Steven L. Chandler Jr., 44, of 504 Sunset Drive, Edinburgh, faces misdemeanor charges of intimidation, disorderly conduct, battery and resisting law enforcement. The incident happened about 1 a.m. in the emergency room of Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, according to a police report.

At the time, a sheriff’s deputy, who was serving as a security officer at the hospital, alerted the sheriff’s department that a man was acting in a disorderly way. The nursing staff had alerted him. When the deputy arrived at the scene, he said Chandler knocked over several chairs and cursed at him. Other people said Chandler threatened them, cursed at them and spit at one of them, according to the report.

After other deputies arrived, Chandler, who was using a wheelchair, refused to get in a police car and said he had brittle bone disease, so police could not manhandle him. A deputy attempted to arrest him for disorderly conduct when Chandler grabbed his wrist, according to the report.

After additional deputies arrived to help arrest him, Chandler was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was released on $12,000 bond.
