The longest tenured boys basketball coach at any Johnson County high school is bidding the area farewell.

Matt Wadsworth, whose seven seasons at Whiteland resulted a pair of county tournament titles, confirmed Monday evening that he is leaving the Warriors to become the new head coach at Edgewood.

The Mustangs are coming off consecutive 20-win seasons under J.B. Neill, with a Class 3A sectional title in 2018. Neill had recently departed for longtime Class A power Bloomfield.

“Edgewood’s a special place in the sense that recently, they’ve had a lot of basketball success,” Wadsworth said, referencing the school’s nine sectional titles over the last 18 seasons. “It presents a new challenge basketball-wise that I look forward to.”

Wadsworth posted a 78-82 overall mark in his tenure with the Warriors. His best stretch came in 2015-16 and 2016-17, when his teams went 32-14 and won back-to-back Johnson County championships, Whiteland’s first since 1955.

Before coming to Whiteland, Wadsworth had gone 55-31 in four seasons at North Posey. His first head coaching stop was a single season at Riverton Parke in 2007-08.

Wadsworth’s departure makes Zach Hahn and Brad Dickey, entering their sixth seasons at Center Grove and Franklin, respectively, the new coaching deans of the county — at least with one school. Drew Glentzer is going into his third year at Indian Creek after seven at Edinburgh.

Wadsworth is proud of the stability he’s helped to create there. He credits the school administration as well as his coaching staff, especially Jim Higdon, who was by his side for all seven years with the Warriors.

The county titles stand out as the most visible highlight of his tenure, but Wadsworth will remember the effort that went into making those victories possible.

“It’s memorable that we won,” he said, “but as a coach I’ll take away the memory of hard-working kids working together to achieve something that hadn’t been done in a long time.”
