Johnson County, state unemployment increases

The Johnson County unemployment rate mirrored a statewide increase from May to June, but the unemployment rate is still down from June of 2018.

The unemployment rate in Johnson County increased from 2.5 percent at the end of May to 2.8 percent at the end of June, while the state average increased from 2.9 percent to 3.3 percent during the same time period.

Johnson County residents still find themselves employed at a higher rate than in June of last year, when the unemployment rate in the county was 3 percent. Almost 81,000 Johnson County residents were employed at the end of June, compared to almost 2,300 who were unemployed.

The statistics come from the June report released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Johnson County is tied with Hendricks County for the third-lowest unemployment rate in central Indiana. It trails Boone and Hamilton counties, which both have 2.6 percent of their workforce unemployed.

Johnson County is tied for the 18th lowest unemployment rate in Indiana out of 92 counties.
