Man arrested after killing relative’s dog

A Greenwood man was arrested after video showed him beating a relative’s dog to death.

Michael D. Lukas, 35, 668 Downing Drive, was arrested on a charge of torturing and killing an animal, a Level 6 felony that packs up to 2 ½ years in jail.

Greenwood Police responded around 6 p.m. Sunday to a couple who told police that a relative had killed another relative’s dog.

The woman said that she had found the relative’s dog dead inside the home at about 2 p.m. Lukas was questioned about the death by the relative, but denied any knowledge of it, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

Security footage in the home recorded about 11:50 a.m. shows Lukas shouting phrases at the dog, including, “I’m going to kill you.” Other things Lukas shouted at the dog were profane and aggressive, the report said.

In the video, Lukas is heard hitting and kicking the dog. The dog can be heard whimpering at some points in the video. After about 12 minutes of beating, Lukas picks up the dog and throws it down.

Lukas at first denied any contact with the dog, until police said they had video footage of him beating the dog. Lukas then said he kicked and threw the dog, according to the report.

Lukas was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he is being held on $1,200 bond.
