Fire in Franklin temporarily closes area businesses

Several restaurants, a dry cleaner, a gym and salons in Franklin are temporarily closed after a fire caused smoke damage in a strip mall.

No one was injured in the blaze and investigators are still looking into what caused the fire and how much damage was done.

Smoke was reported in Anytime Fitness, 1168 N. Main St., about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Franklin Fire Department. The strip mall is off of U.S. 31 and Main Street.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]

Firefighters found that the fire was actually in Penn Station, which is in the same strip mall as the gym, said Chuck Ridpath, a spokesman for the Franklin Fire Department.

The fire was under control in about 45 minutes, but most of the businesses in the strip mall sustained smoked damage and remained closed through Thursday.

“There was a lot of smoke in each of these buildings,” Ridpath said.

The strip mall houses Suntan City, #1 Nails, Penn Station, Papa Murphy’s Pizza, Tuchman Cleaners, Anytime Fitness and Urban Air Trampoline Park.

Urban Air did not sustain any damage. The owner, Anthony Rains, said not having a connected roof and the existence of a fire wall is likely why the trampoline park came out unscathed.

The park was able to open for normal activities and business hours on Thursday and is remaining open.

The re-opening of the other stores is unclear. Anytime Fitness and Sun Tan City both had signs posted saying they were closed until further notice.

Penn Station was closed Thursday and it is unclear when the sandwich restaurant will open again, said Annette Reed, operations manager for Penn Station.

Restaurants that had damage and that serve food and are licensed by the health department would need to be inspected by the Johnson County Health Department before they could reopen. Penn Station and Papa Murphys would have to be inspected, said Betsy Swearingen, Johnson County Health Department director.

Health department inspectors would do a general inspection of the affected areas once the restaurant has signaled that it is ready to reopen. Inspectors would also make sure that any food affected by the smoke or fire would be disposed of, Swearingen said.

Bargersville, Whiteland and Amity fire departments assisted with the fire, Ridpath said.
