Library offers new program on weekends

A pilot program at the Franklin library is aiming to teach students on the weekend.

The library at 401 State St. has unrolled a pilot addition to its childhood learning curriculum. The program, dubbed Creation Station, is meant to help students engage in educational activities at the library’s children’s department.

Libraries offer multiple programs throughout the week, including story times and after-school clubs, but not all families can attend programming in the middle of a weekday. Creation Station was created to allow families who cannot attend traditionally timed programming a chance to learn together too, said Sarah Lockwood, children’s librarian at the Franklin library.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]

“We want to provide as much educational programming as possible for as many families as possible,” she said. “We want to reach the families and children who could not come during the week.”

One librarian works in the children’s department over the weekend, and each librarian was allowed to choose the theme and curriculum of the Saturday they were working. Families will have the chance to work on writing prompts and work with Legos, fossils, light and art, Lockwood said.

The idea is that the program will mostly be self-led, but a librarian will be available to help families.

The new programming also fits in with the library’s goal of creative education, and families are encouraged to work on projects together, Lockwood said.

“I personally want families to have meaningful, fun, educational time together,” she said.

Programming is offered every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and families can drop by at any time to access the program.
