Wednesday wasn’t the greatest scoring day for the Franklin girls golf team, but the state’s 13th-ranked squad still found a way to get the job done.

Medalist Liv Parramore posted a 79 on a challenging Foxcliff layout, helping the Grizzly Cubs to successfully defend their Mid-State Conference championship.

Franklin finished with a 347 to top runner-up Perry Meridian by 10 strokes.

“I was pretty happy with the overall mental attitude of the girls today,” Grizzly Cubs coach Chris Kacarab said. “We talk about it a lot, that you’re not going to have your best round every time out, and today was certainly reflective of that, but we hung in there and got the job done.”

Parramore opened her day with a double bogey on the eighth hole but got it back with an eagle on the par-5 ninth. The junior then played her next nine holes at 1 over par and rode that stretch to a final score of 79, five strokes clear of the field.

“I was just thinking about getting back to even, and that was my goal,” Parramore said. “I had a few blow-up holes, but other than that it was pretty good. I stayed really calm the whole time, even though things weren’t going my way, and I think that’s why I was able to par the last two holes.”

Ava Ray and Ellie Beavins joined Parramore on the all-conference team for the Grizzly Cubs, shooting 85 and 90, respectively. Alexa Wilkison (93) and Carly Woodward (94) rounded out the Franklin scoring.

Greenwood, which finished fourth with a team total of 375, placed two on the all-league team as well. Maura Guilfoy was second among all individuals with an 84, one shot ahead of teammate Maecee Terhune.

Taylor Watson added a 99 and Maeci West a 107 for the Woodmen on a day that coach Brittany Runge considered encouraging.

“The goal this year is to win the (sectional),” she said. “We came in second last year, so the goal is to win, and I think we can. We’ve got to get a little lower than 375, but this is one of the lowest ones we’ve had so far this year, so going on a downward trend is a good thing.”

Whiteland was eighth with a 446. Allie Watson paced the Warriors with a 93 and Kierra Mitchell carded a 103.

Franklin, meanwhile, was happy to be able to hold it together for the win on a day when things weren’t always going smoothly.

“A lot of our mental attitudes were good today, even though we weren’t playing the best,” Parramore said. “Ellie said she wasn’t happy at all with how she played, but she was happy with how she was responding to her play. That’s kind of how it was for me too.”
