Semi crashes into multi family building in Edinburgh

More than $100,000 in damage was caused after a semi truck driver crashed into a multi-family home in Edinburgh early Monday afternoon.

The driver, Donald J. Harrington, 56, of Alabama, was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital. He was in stable condition on Monday afternoon.

The semi left the road near the intersection of Toner and Grant streets northeast of downtown Edinburgh just a few minutes after noon on Monday, said Allen Smith, chief of Edinburgh Fire Department.

The driver of the semi missed a turn, causing him to drive through the building. Investigators suspect that the driver suffered a medical emergency which caused him to miss the turn, Smith said.

Police and fire crews towed the semi out of the building and the White River Township Fire Department was working to secure the building from structural collapse, Smith said.

The White River Township Fire Department is the department in Johnson County that works on setting shores in structures that are in danger of collapsing. The job typically takes between two and three hours, said Jeremy Pell, chief of the White River Township Fire Department.
