Motorcyclist injured, other driver arrested

A Franklin man was arrested after leaving the scene of an accident that injured a motorcyclist early Friday morning, the sheriff’s office said.

Wade Mahon, 27, of Franklin, was arrested on charges of failing to stop after an accident and possessing a restricted device used for drug injection. Court records show that in August, Mahon was sentenced to one year of probation in Hamilton County on a felony syringe possession conviction.

The accident happened just before 5:42 a.m. Friday on Rocklane Road, east of Greenwood.

The motorcyclist told Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies that the vehicle had crossed into his lane and he could not avoid the accident, according to a news release from Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess.

Mahon struck the motorcyclist with enough force to throw the man over the car and into the road, the news release said.

The motorcyclist, Carey A. Shipe, 49, of Greenwood, said he was in severe pain and was taken to Methodist Hospital at IU Health for possible broken bones.

After the accident, a witness followed Mahon’s car until a deputy could catch up to them. Mahon told the deputy that when he exited the interstate, he had trouble seeing because of his headlights and thought he drove into an embankment, rather than a motorcyclist. The car was severely damaged, with the hood buckled and steam coming out of it,

Police found a syringe in the car.

The Nineveh Fire Department assisted the sheriff’s office at the accident scene. Mahon, of 1106 Graham St., was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he is being held on $4,800 bond.
