Johnson County, statewide unemployment sees decreases

The Johnson County unemployment rate decreased for the first time since April, with the percentage of jobless Hoosiers dropping as well.

The county’s unemployment rate was 2.7 percent in August, down from 2.9 percent in July. The statewide rate saw a more marked difference, decreasing from 3.6 percent in July to 3.2 percent in August.

The county’s unemployment rate is down a half percent since August of last year, with the state rate down the same amount during that 12-month span.

More than 83,000 people in the Johnson County workforce were employed at the end of August, compared to 2,213 who were unemployed.

The statistics come from the August report released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Johnson County is tied with Hendricks County for the third-lowest unemployment rate in central Indiana. It trails Boone and Hamilton counties, which both have 2.5 percent of their workforce unemployed.

Bartholomew County, just south of Johnson County, has the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 2.3 percent. Vermillion County, which borders Illinois in the west-central part of Indiana, has the highest jobless rate at 4.7 percent.

Out of 92 counties in Indiana, 13 counties have a lower unemployment rate than Johnson County.
