3 dead after Greenwood plane crashes in Michigan

Three people are dead after a small plane that flew out of the Indy South Greenwood Airport Thursday morning crashed near the Michigan airport it was en route to.

The leased aircraft is registered to a Greenwood company, although it was unclear Thursday afternoon which company, said Spencer Flynn, a spokesperson with the Capital Region International Airport in Lansing, Mich.

Six passengers were on board. Three were in critical condition Thursday evening at a Lansing hospital, Flynn said.

It is unclear what caused the crash, but it occurred during landing, about 125 yards from the airport’s perimeter, he said. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating, according to an airport news release.

“Any speculation to the cause of this tragedy is premature. A complete investigation is
necessary before we can answer any questions pertaining to a possible cause of this
incident. Aircraft accidents are very complex and will involve many agencies to conclude
the investigation,” the news release said.

Indy South Greenwood Airport officials would not comment until all families have been notified, a city spokesperson said.

The Clinton County Michigan Sheriff’s Office is still working to notify the victims’ families before they will release names.

“At this time, there will be no speculation as to why,” Clinton County Sheriff Lawrence Jerue said. “We are going to continue to treat it as an active crime scene.”
