Fifth plane crash victim has died; service today

A fifth victim of last week’s plane crash in Michigan has died.

Franklin resident and co-pilot Joel Beavins has died, according to an obituary placed in the Daily Journal and a National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report released Wednesday. The Clinton County (Michigan) Sheriff’s Office reported his condition was unclear earlier this week.

He died on Sunday at a Lansing-area hospital, according to the obituary.

A service in honor of Joel’s life is scheduled for 6 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, 1300 East Adams Drive, Franklin. It is open to the public.

Three other Johnson County residents died Oct. 3 when a plane from Greenwood crashed within yards of the Capital Region International Airport in Lansing: John Lowe, of Greenwood, who chartered the plane to take employees of The Engineering Collaborative and a contractor to a site visit in Michigan; Neil Sego, of Trafalgar, also an employee of the engineering firm; and Tim Clark, of Franklin, one of two pilots on board.

Plainfield resident Zechariah Bennett also died last weekend.

There is one survivor. Aaron Blackford, of Frankton, was upgraded to critical but stable condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the cause of the crash, an agency spokesperson said Wednesday.
