Greenwood man arrested after hitting woman, child

A Greenwood man was arrested after a woman told police that he beat her, smashed her phone so she could not get help and threw a juvenile across a room.

Christopher Phillip Wood, 50, was arrested on charges of domestic battery and domestic battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years old.

Police responded to a panic alarm at 11:02 p.m. Wednesday. The panic alarm was activated at a home in the 4600 block of Fairview Road in Greenwood, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

A woman standing at the front door told police that Wood was beating her and that she had to lock the doors on the home to keep him out and that he hit a 10-year-old child, the report said.

The woman told police that she made a comment to Wood earlier in the evening, and he grabbed the back of her neck and began slamming her head back and forth on the wall. The woman put her hands up to try and keep her head from being hit, according to the report.

She grabbed her phone to call 911 and Wood grabbed her phone and slammed it on the floor. The woman screamed for the 10-year-old to hit a panic alarm and the child held onto Wood’s leg and begged him to stop hitting the woman, the report said.

Wood picked up the child and threw him across the room, causing a scratch on the child’s back. The juvenile was then able to hit the panic alarm, according to the report.

When Wood left to pack items to leave, the woman yelled to get her phone back. Wood then grabbed the woman again, grabbed her head and thrashed her head back and forth. He grabbed his bag, left and told the woman not to get him in trouble with police, according to the report.

Police saw scratch marks on the woman and a large abrasion on the child. There was an infant sleeping in the home during the incident, the report said.

Police found Wood at a nearby, vacant home. He told police that he hit the woman because she wasn’t treating him like a man and threw the child because the child was in his way.

Both victims were taken to Community Hospital South to be checked out, the report said.

Wood, 4642 W. Fairview Road, was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he is being held without bond.

Wood continued to yell obscenities in the woman’s direction at the time of his arrest, the report said.
