High school football: Sectional final previews

Class 6A

Franklin Central (5-5) at Center Grove (5-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: centergrovefootball.com

Recent history: The Trojans have won sectional showdowns the last two years, including a 23-6 victory in last year’s title game.

Sagarin ratings: Franklin Central 84.72 (23rd in Indiana, 17th in Class 6A), Center Grove 95.87 (12th, ninth in 6A)

Players to watch: Franklin Central — QB Peyton Viewegh, RB Josh Ruley, WR Peyton McClendon, LB Nate Talhelm, LB Luke Shomaker; Center Grove — QB Tayven Jackson, RB Daniel Weems, WR Trent Veith, DL Caden Curry, DL Austin Booker

What to look for: Much like Center Grove, the Flashes have been hardened by a difficult regular-season schedule in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference — so they’re used to competition and shouldn’t fold quite as easily as Columbus East did last week. What Franklin Central has struggled with is scoring; it’s topped 14 points just once since a Week 2 win at Roncalli. With the Trojans’ defense unlikely to yield more than that, can the Flashes keep the score low enough to stay in it the whole way?

Class 5A

Franklin (8-2) at New Palestine (10-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Radio: KORN Country (100.3 FM)

Recent history: This will be the first time the teams have met since the Dragons’ 25-0 victory in 1990.

Sagarin ratings: Franklin 76.54 (41th, ninth in 5A), New Palestine 98.05 (eighth, second in 5A)

Players to watch: Franklin — QB Drew Byerly, RB Jalen Ward, WR Christian McClure, LB Brendan Couch, LB Noah Crow; New Palestine — QB Lincoln Roth, RB Charlie Spegal, WR Blake Austin, WR/DB Maxen Hook, OL/DL Kyle King, LB Aven Jones

What to look for: Two of the three highest scoring offenses in Class 5A will be on the field, but that doesn’t guarantee a shootout. Byerly and friends will have their work cut out for them against a Dragon defense that has allowed just three teams to score in double digits. One could make the case that New Pal hasn’t faced an offense as potent as Franklin’s, which might be true — but that argument cuts both ways. It remains to be seen whether the Grizzly Cubs can move the ball as effectively tonight as they have against almost every other team they’ve faced.

Class 4A

Lebanon (5-5) at Roncalli (6-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: rebelmedianetwork.com (audio only; video available on Roncalli’s YouTube and Facebook pages)

Recent history: The Rebels used a last-second field goal to edge the Tigers, 34-33, in a sectional showdown on their way to the 4A state championship in 2016.

Sagarin ratings: Lebanon 55.04 (109th, 27th in 4A), Roncalli 66.89 (66th, 15th in 4A)

Players to watch: Lebanon — QB/P Garrett Harker, WR/DB J.C. Reese, WR/LB Michael Reese, WR/LB Jarrett French, DB Drew Wilson; Roncalli — QB Aidan Leffler, RB Baron Huebler, WR Kyle Lockard, DE Jack Wardzala, DB Dominic Brown

What to look for: The Rebels’ secondary will be tested by the Reeses, who have hauled in a combined 81 receptions this season. Harker, though, should face more pressure than normal in the form of Wardzala, who has 90 tackles (16 for loss) and 8.5 sacks. If the quarterback can avoid trouble and still get clean throws off, Roncalli will have a battle on its hands. Though it opened with tough games against Mooresville and Zionsville, Lebanon hasn’t faced the same overall caliber of competition as Roncalli has. Will that come into play here as it so often does during tournament time?
