Local agencies perform sex offender compliance checks

Multiple local agencies did compliance checks on more than 100 registered sex offenders this week.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office conducted the multi-agency compliance check in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service and probation officers in Johnson County.

Officers conducted address checks on 130 sex offenders in the area to ensure they lived where they are registered. Checks are done annually or quarterly, according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Convicted sex offenders must report their primary residence within 72 hours of moving. The sheriff’s office must then verify that the offender is living at the reported address annually or quarterly, depending on the offender’s offense classification, said Duane Burgess, Johnson County Sheriff.

Information was gathered that could mean at least five sex offenders were not living at their reported address during Wednesday’s check. Those offenders will be investigated and could face additional criminal charges, Burgess said.

The sheriff’s office conducts checks seven days a week and works with agencies to make sure sex offenders are in compliance with the law, according to the news release.

“The sheriff’s office’s main priority is to keep our children and citizens safe. Working with all local law enforcement agencies ensures this is done to the best of our abilities everyday,” Burgess said.
