Homeowner follows suspected thief, leads deputies to arrest

Quick actions by a homeowner and sheriff’s deputies resulted in the arrest of a Greencastle man after he broke into barns and a carriage house and stole several items, deputies said.

John Robert O’Harra, 32, was arrested on charges of felony theft, driving while suspended with a prior conviction, criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

About 8 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to the 7600 block of E. County Road 1075 N., on a report of an active theft. The homeowner said there was a truck parked between two of his buildings, and he saw someone moving around in his carriage house, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office news release.

O’Harra left in the truck, and the homeowner followed until police caught up to them, according to the news release.

Deputies watched as O’Harra threw several items into the road from the truck before they pulled him over, the news release said.

Several of the items inside the truck and one item that was thrown from the truck belonged to the homeowner, according to the news release.

It was later discovered that doors had been pried open at three of the homeowner’s buildings — all separate from the main residence — and a window at one of the buildings, the news release said.

O’Harra told deputies and detectives he was dropped off at the property so someone could fix his truck, but that person never showed, so he fixed it himself and left, according to the news release. He said the items were already in the truck, and denied breaking into any building on the property or stealing anything.

O’Harra, 1946 W. US Highway 40, is being held at the Johnson County jail on $4,200 bond.
