Woman pleads guilty after meth found in home she shared with kids

A Greenwood woman was sentenced to a year of probation and about four months in home detention after police found meth in the home she shared with two young children.

Kelli Lay, 38, 1654 Honey Grove Lane, pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a common nuisance, both Level 6 felonies. A third charge of possession of marijuana was dropped, according to court documents.

Superior Court 3 Judge Lance Hamner accepted the plea agreement, which included a sentence of 120 days of home detention and 365 days of probation, earlier this month. Lay was given one day of jail credit, court documents said.

Lay was arrested in early July after police found methamphetamine in her apartment where an infant and toddler were living. Meth was sold from the home dozens of times in 2019, court documents said.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation and gathered enough information to get a search warrant for the apartment at Honey Creek Apartments, off State Road 135. Sheriff’s office detectives, Franklin police and Greenwood police went to the apartment to investigate, Sheriff Duane Burgess said at the time of the arrest.

No one was injured, and the Department of Child Services was called to take the children after no family members or friends could be reached, Burgess said.

The children were on the floor, and detectives found methamphetamine in three different locations at the apartment, in addition to a container of marijuana, according to court documents.

Meth was found on the kitchen counter, on a tray in a kitchen cabinet and in Lay’s wallet, court documents said. Investigators also found drug packaging supplies and digital scales, commonly used to weigh and package meth for sale. Police also found a gun, court documents said.
