Cougars net historic first

Greenwood Christian defeated crosstown rival Greenwood for the first time in its history, going wire to wire for a 45-34 triumph in its season opener on Saturday night.

The Cougars had lost all six previous meetings in the series, which began in 2014-15.

Derek Peterson scored 17 points to pace GCA, which also got 10 points from Andrew Anderson. The Woodmen (1-1) were led by 10 points each from Spencer Aaron and Gavin Dowling.

Braves thump Lancers

Indian Creek picked up its first victory of the young season, running away from Edinburgh for an 86-30 home win on Saturday.

Girls basketball

Trojans edge Rebels

Center Grove used a third-quarter surge to break a halftime deadlock and pave the way to a 63-60 home win over Roncalli on Saturday afternoon.

Mary Wilson scored 19 points and Claire Rake added 16 for the Class 4A No. 10 Trojans (7-1). Maddie Bischoff and Alana Vinson led the Rebels (4-2) with 28 and 24 points, respectively.

Cougars topple Waldron

Alexis Mead scored 10 points, including the 1,000th of her career, to help Greenwood Christian to a 51-35 victory over Waldron on Saturday. Izzy Reed poured in 23 points for the Class A No. 8 Cougars (3-2).

Lancers clobber Hornets

Annelise Lollar paced a balanced attack with 18 points as Class A No. 11 Edinburgh routed Indianapolis Howe on Saturday, 74-48. Callie Hancock, Haven Link and Destiney Ramey contributed 15 points apiece for the Lancers (5-1).
