Roncalli suspends faculty member amid assault allegation

UPDATED 10 A.M. WEDNESDAY: A Roncalli High School faculty member has been placed on paid administrative leave after allegedly physically assaulting a student on Friday in the south-side Catholic school’s cafeteria.

The incident occurred about noon Friday. The student told the dean of students he was assaulted by the faculty member, and school officials called the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to investigate. Police were told that the student was assaulted by a faculty member, according to an IMPD report.

School officials also reported the incident to the Indiana Department of Child Services, and police interviewed both the student and faculty member, according to a written statement from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. The student didn’t require medical attention, and the school sent an email to parents about the incident, the statement said.

The faculty member will remain on leave while police investigate, according to the statement.

Roncalli High School is also involved in a separate IMPD investigation. Students on the school’s football team are accused of videotaping a student with Down syndrome urinating, and later forcing him to put his mouth on a player’s chest in retaliation for speaking out about the initial incident.
