Ramey makes history for Edinburgh girls

Destiney Ramey’s record-setting night didn’t start the way she had hoped.

Three points from becoming the all-time scoring leader for the Edinburgh girls basketball program, the senior guard nervously misfired on her first attempt against Corydon Central on Saturday.

Ramey’s second offering, a deep, high-arching 3-point attempt from the right wing, found all net. A moment etched in her mind forever. She immediately looked at the sky, placed both hands on her head and then bent over to touch the floor before being congratulated by teammates.

The game was stopped briefly in order to acknowledge the accomplishment. Players and fans from both teams applauded.

The basket pushed Ramey’s career total to 1,158 points, eclipsing the decade-long standard of 2010 graduate Emilee Owens. She finished with 27 points in a 60-57 loss and stands at 1,194 going into tonight’s game at Speedway.

“It was crazy, actually. My first shot was way off, but I threw it up there on the second try and it went in. I definitely shed some tears,” Ramey said. “My goal coming into the season was to reach 1,000 (career) points. I never thought I would get the record.”

Everything about Ramey’s high school basketball career hinted at her most-anticipated points being scored on a 3-pointer. She entered the season having made 133 triples and she’s upped that figure to 168 through Monday’s win against Hauser.

Her previous milestone this season, becoming the fourth Edinburgh girls player to reach 1,000 points, came on a breakaway layup early in a loss to Indian Creek during the Johnson County tournament.

Individual accolades aside, Ramey is poised to be part of a team that might soon make some more school history. At 10-4, the Lancers are closing in on the program’s record of 12 victories, established during the 2010-11 season.

All the while, the senior’s mindset remains the same.

“The day of the (Indian Creek) game, the 1,000 points was all over my mind, but once the game started I was the same,” Ramey said. “It was the best feeling ever and such a relief, honestly. I’ve had that on my shoulders, I feel, all year.

“But getting over the .500 range as a team, that’s what I’ve wanted to do my whole career.”

Edinburgh won eight, 10 and eight games in Ramey’s first three seasons.

Ramey leads the Lancers in scoring with a 20.9 norm. She also came into the week ranked first on the team in rebounds (6.4), assists (3.5) and steals (4.5). But she’s also gotten much more help than in years past — senior Haven Link and junior Annelise Lollar are both scoring in double figures, with sophomore Callie Hancock not far behind.

“Destiney still plays hard and is still looking to get her teammates involved. She has always been looking to be a scorer, but she has had to work harder because other teams are keying on her,” Edinburgh coach Amy Schilling said.

“The thing with this team is we’ve had other people step up and had games where two or three players were in double figures, which is what we’ve lacked in years past.”
