Victim named in well construction accident

The Bargersville man who died Monday in a well construction accident has been identified.

Douglas Scott Abney, 56, was trapped in a trench at the bottom of a 15-foot well about noon Monday when its walls began collapsing in on him. His son and another worker on the scene tried to rescue him unsuccessfully, as they determined they wouldn’t be able to without risking their lives, Bargersville Fire Chief Erik Funkhauser said.

At 12:10 p.m. the Bargersville Fire Department was called to the well, on the 4900 block of W. 225 N, where both they and the Indianapolis Fire Department’s rescue team determined it would be too dangerous to attempt to rescue Abney after they tried to shore the trench in order to descend into the collapsed well, he said.

The two departments worked for more than 10 hours to recover the body, which they did at 10:44 p.m., according to a news release from Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess.
