Overnight fire forces family out of home

A fire at a Franklin home caused damage to a garage and attic and forced a family to evacuate early Wednesday.

The Franklin Fire Department was called to the 1700 block of Churchill Road at 1:06 a.m. and, with help from the Greenwood and Bargersville fire departments, got the blaze under control within 6 minutes, Franklin Fire Chief Matt Culp said.

Although the origin nor cause of the fire has been established, the house has since been boarded up and the family is staying with relatives. The house suffered mostly smoke damage. The family had renovated the garage as an extension of their living space, Culp said.

Fire crews were able to cut a hole through the garage door and extinguish the fire, after which they made sure there were no remaining embers that could reignite it, he said.
