Man arrested on felony confinement charge

A Bargersville man was arrested after a man told police he forced him out of an apartment by threatening him with a knife.

Chad Edward Cooper, 39, was arrested on a charge of felony criminal confinement and two charges of theft.

Criminal confinement with a weapon is a Level 3 felony. The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what, if any, charges to file.

A Greenwood police officer was dispatched at 9:07 p.m. Monday to a southside bar to help the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigate a kidnapping report out of Greenwood, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

A man told police he was at an apartment in the 1500 block of Lacebark Drive in Greenwood when Cooper came into the apartment, held a knife up and ordered the man into his car, according to the report.

The man said he thought Cooper would hurt him if he did not comply, and Cooper may have wanted to kidnap him due to a relationship he was having with someone close to Cooper. Cooper then took $30 from the man and a cell phone from a woman who was at the apartment, the report said.

Cooper and the man then drove north on State Road 135 before stopping at a Greenwood gas station. Cooper went into the gas station and came out with a cell phone charger that Cooper told the man he had stolen, according to the report.

While in the vehicle, Cooper offered the man methamphetamine and threatened him with a different knife that was about 7 inches long, the victim told police.

Cooper continued driving north, and Cooper allowed the man to get out of the vehicle when they reached the southside bar. That’s when the victim called police, the report said.

He told police he believed Cooper was at the his apartment and was stealing his stuff, according to the report.

A second officer went to the victim’s apartment where he spotted Cooper’s vehicle and saw someone moving inside the man’s apartment, the report said.

Cooper told police he went over to the woman’s apartment to stop the man from getting hooked on drugs, and that he entered the residence through an unlocked door. He said he was at the man’s apartment to help the man pack for a move, the report said.

Officers found the knives the victim had described at the apartment. Cooper told police where they were, according to the report. Police also found the woman’s cell phone in Cooper’s car, the report said.

Cooper, 7000 Tremont Drive, was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $18,000 bond.
