Favorites advance in sectional prelims

Host and reigning champion Franklin took care of business in Thursday’s sectional preliminaries, advancing the maximum contingent of 24 individuals and three relays into Saturday’s championship finals.

Lucy Ho and Sarah Hoffman each posted the fastest times in their two individual events, with Allie Lacy and Kabria Chapman each first in another.

Center Grove’s Devin Trammell had the fastest time in the 200-yard IM, and the Trojans put 16 individuals in championship finals. Greenwood placed eight in the top eight, including top seed Grace Nuhfer in the 100 butterfly, while Whiteland will have seven finalists, Greenwood Christian two and Indian Creek one.

Grizzly Cubs fall to Cougars

Franklin suffered a narrow 57-56 road loss to Trinity Lutheran on Thursday night. Drew Byerly had 15 points for the Grizzly Cubs (7-8), while Colby Welch hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12.

No. 1 GCA survives on road

Champ McCorkle collected 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists to help Greenwood Christian pull out a 75-69 victory at Morristown on Thursday.

Derek Petersen had 19 points and five assists for the Class A No. 1 Cougars (18-0), while Andrew Anderson and Styles McCorkle added 10 and nine points, respectively.
