Indian Creek picks construction manager for multi-million dollar facility

Indian Creek schools has chosen a construction manager for its multi-million dollar transportation and maintenance facility that will sit just south of its Trafalgar campus.

The school board approved a bid package from West Lafayette-based construction company Hagerman, Inc. during its meeting Tuesday. The package included a $24,740 pre-construction bid and a construction bid of $253,305.

Along with overseeing the project and having a construction superintendent on site throughout the build, Hagerman will take work on some aspects of the project, such as metalwork or masonry, for example, although which parts the company ends up working on has not been determined yet, Superintendent Tim Edsell said.

Construction crews were supposed to break ground on the 19,500-square-foot facility last fall, but an agreement with Schererville-based contractor CORE Construction fell through in November. The school board, during its meeting last month, narrowed down construction manager candidates, and later interviewed two.

Hagerman has experience with similar projects, which is why the school board chose it to complete the $4 million project, Edsell said.

“Both (companies) did a great job with their presentation and interview with the board. We felt more comfortable, confident and excited about developing a good relationship with Hagerman. They’ve been in existence several decades and they have a lot of K-12 experience,” Edsell said.

“They’ve done transportation buildings and educational buildings.”

The current transportation and maintenance facility is located behind Indian Creek Middle School, and has created traffic jams during pick-up and drop-off times. The new location will ease traffic and increase space for bus storage. The building will include offices for the district’s transportation personnel, sandwiched by four bus bays on one side and a garage for bus maintenance and repair on the other, Edsell said in October.

Heading into the spring, Indian Creek schools expects to collect bids for the construction work itself. The district hopes to have construction completed by the end of the year, Edsell has said.
