2 arrested on prescription fraud charges

Two out-of-state women were arrested for sending fake prescriptions to local pharmacies.

Darena Tychell Grays, 28, 151 Haas Drive, San Leandro, California, and Jamilah Monique McCray, 32, North Ridge Parkway, Sandy Springs, Georgia, were arrested on charges of prescription fraud, a Level 6 felony.

Police responded to a call Sunday from the CVS Pharmacy located on U.S. 31 in Greenwood, where a pharmacist reported two possible fraudulent prescriptions for Phenergan with Codeine and Amoxicillin, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

The pharmacist told police the prescriptions were both higher than the normal amount prescribed, and said he called the doctor the prescription came from to learn that neither prescription had been authorized, the report said.

The same day, officers responded to a call from the Immediate Care Center located at 1001 N. Madison Ave., also in Greenwood, which reported they were contacted by several pharmacies about suspicious prescriptions called in under two of the care center’s doctors, according to the report.

The care center made a list of the five names used on the prescriptions, all of which were not patients at the Immediate Care Center, the report said. All of the prescriptions contained at least one for Codeine.

Later in the day, employees at the same CVS called police again to report that Grays had attempted to pick up the prescription. Grays was denied the medication, and fled from the pharmacy, the report said. Police located the vehicle on U.S. 31 shortly after.

Grays and McCray were in the car and were both identified by the pharmacists at the locations where they attempted to pick up prescriptions, according to the report.

During a search of the car, police found several pieces of torn notebook paper with eight additional names and birth dates written, none of which were used at the local pharmacies where the fraudulent prescriptions were reported. The names of the two doctors from the Immediate Care Center and their Drug Enforcement Administration numbers were also written on the papers, the report said.

Grays and McCray were arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail. Grays is held on $2,400 bond and McCray is held on $4,800 bond.
