The Johnson County unemployment rate rose to 2.9% in January, its highest since July and an increase of 0.5% since December.
The Indiana state unemployment rate also saw an increase, although it was not nearly as pronounced, going from 3.0% to 3.1% from December to January.
Despite the month over month increase, the Johnson County unemployment rate is down from January 2019, when 3.5% of the Johnson County workforce was unemployed. Fewer than 2,500 Johnson County residents were jobless in January.
Although there is an increase in the county’s unemployment rate, the number of employed people grew by 334 between December and January, although the overall Johnson County residents eligible to work grew by 869 people, causing an increase in the percentage of unemployed county residents.
In January, just seven of Indiana’s 92 counties had a higher percentage of its work-eligible populace employed.

Crawford County in southern Indiana had the highest unemployment rate in January at 6.1%, while Hamilton County in central Indiana had the lowest at 2.6%.
