Greenwood man arrested on trespassing, drug possession charges

A Greenwood man was arrested after he kicked in the door to an apartment, started a fight in the parking lot of the complex and attempted to destroy a pill found in his pocket. 

Daniel Collin McKenzie, 38, was arrested on charges of burglary / breaking and entering, criminal trespassing, obstruction of justice, criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance. 

Greenwood police on Monday responded to a fight that was about to break out between a large group of people in the parking lot of The Gable’s apartment complex on Smith Valley Road in Greenwood, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

The officers identified McKenzie as the aggressor in the fight, according to the report. One of the residents told police McKenzie had kicked in the door to the apartment of an acquaintance while she was inside, the report said.

Police handcuffed McKenzie while one of the officers went to interview the apartment resident. The officer detaining McKenzie found a small white pill in his pocket during a search, according to the report.

The officer placed the pill on the hood of his car before continuing the search. McKenzie bent over and picked up the pill off the car with his mouth, spit it out onto the ground and attempted to step on it, but the officer stopped him, the report said. 

McKenzie did not have a a prescription for the pill found in his pocket, the report said.

He was taken to the Johnson County jail where he is held on $5,400 bond.
