Storms cause damage in downtown Franklin

Severe storms Wednesday night caused significant damage in Franklin, closing several downtown streets.

Strong winds blew the roof off Jefferson Street Pub at the corner of Jefferson and Water streets, witnesses said. Debris flooded the intersection.

City officials asked people to avoid the area while they worked to clear the debris. Both streets were closed, but expected to reopen by Thursday morning.

"Please folks give us time along with the Fire Department and Street Department to get things cleaned up and safe for travel before venturing out to assess damage," Franklin police chief Kirby Cochran said on Facebook.

Several other buildings and structures in Franklin also suffered storm damage, including First Presbyterian Church and Girls Inc. of Johnson County.

Trees and power lines were down across the county after a line of strong storms packing wind speeds of up to 75 mph moved through. A tornado warning was in effect, but it was not clear Wednesday night if a tornado had touched down.
