State reports 3 additional COVID-19 deaths

<p>The coronavirus took the lives of three more Johnson County residents, health officials said Thursday. The county’s death toll is at 11. </p><p>The three most recent deaths were two Greenwood residents, one 72, the other an 89 year old who died at a senior care facility in Southport, and a 55-year-old Nineveh resident, said Betsy Swearingen, director of the Johnson County Health Department. None of them were tied to Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife Community, she said. </p><p>For the second day in a row, confirmed cases climbed by 13 in the county, to 248, officials said. </p><p>As of Thursday, 1,331 Johnson County residents had been tested for the virus, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. More than 100 of those tests were residents and employees of Otterbein Franklin, where a COVID-19 outbreak has occurred, according to the most recent Otterbein Franklin news release.</p><p>At least 22 residents and 17 employees have tested positive for the virus.</p><p>Otterbein officials are expected to provide an update on conditions at the senior care facility today, said David Sease, spokesperson for Otterbein Franklin. </p><p>The state health department on Thursday said the number of presumptive positive cases for COVID-19 in the state has risen to 6,351 after the emergence of 408 more cases.</p><p>The increase in cases fell for the second straight day, after 436 new cases were reported on Wednesday and 563 were reported the previous day.</p><p>The department reported the state’s first case on March 6.</p><p>The death toll in the state rose to 245, up from 203 the previous day. The 42 deaths were the most reported to date in the state health department’s daily updates.</p><p>The department reported that 32,133 people have been tested so far, up from 30,869 in Wedneday’s report. The ISDH said the test numbers reflect only those tests reported to the department and the numbers should not be characterized as a comprehensive total.</p><p>Indianapolis reported 2,415 cases—up from 2,290 cases the previous day—with 81 deaths. The state said 11,356 people have been tested in the city.</p><p>Counties in the Indianapolis area have reported at least 56 cases each. Only three of Indiana’s 92 counties have not reported cases: Benton, Perry and Pike.</p><p>Health officials say Indiana has far more coronavirus cases—possibly thousands more—than those indicated by the number of tests.</p><p>As of Thursday, 432,434 cases had been reported in the United States, with 14,808 deaths, according to a running tally maintained by health researchers at Johns Hopkins University &amp;amp; Medicine. More than 24,100 people have recovered.</p><p>Nearly 1.5 million cases have been reported globally, with 89,733 deaths.
