New executive order relieves requirements for schools, teachers

Gov. Eric Holcomb on Friday issued another executive order, this time excusing schools from meeting certain state requirements that are not possible to complete remotely.

Requirements being waived are those for vision and hearing tests, CPR certifications for teachers, emergency preparedness drills, and school bus drills and inspections, according to the order.

Executive Order 20-20 also makes changes in requirements for teacher evaluations, both for current teachers and student teachers.

For current teachers, the order says districts may choose one of two options under the order: schools may complete normal evaluations, but only teacher observations happening before instruction went remote may be considered; or districts may also choose to use data from the 2018-19 evaluation for any teacher who was not on a remedial plan.

Teachers with a 2018-19 evaluation and evaluation designation from another district may choose to maintain the 2018-2019 school year’s evaluation from the previous school district, or the teacher will receive a new evaluation.

For student teachers, the 10 required hours of classroom instruction may be completed remotely. Student teachers who are unable to complete remote teaching will have that requirement waived, the order said.

Deadlines for teacher improvement and posting school performance reports have also been extended, according to the order.
