Woman in critical condition, man arrested after standoff with Greenwood police

A woman is fighting for her life at an Indianapolis hospital after a Greenwood man shot her in the head, then fired at police.

Randy A. Sutt, 43, was arrested on charges of attempted murder, a Level 1 felony, and criminal recklessness after a standoff with police in a Greenwood subdivision.

Police responded to a report of a person shot about 10:30 a.m. Monday in the 400 block of Legacy Blvd., in the Homecoming at University Park neighborhood, according to a news release from the Greenwood Police Department.

Police arrived and surrounded the house, and Sutt came out of the house armed with a gun, according to the news release. He and officers exchanged gunfire before he retreated back into the house. Sutt then pointed the gun at officers through a side window of the house, and officers fired at him again, the news release said.

No one was injured in either shootout, according to the news release. A negotiator with Greenwood police talked with Sutt on the phone and convinced him to disarm and surrender, police said.

Police entered the house, arrested Sutt and found a woman upstairs with a gunshot wound to the head. She was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she was listed in critical condition and on life support Monday night, according to the news release.

Police did not immediately identify the 55-year-old victim because all of her family had not been notified, the news release said.

Sutt was booked into the Johnson County jail where he is being held without bond.

Greenwood police are working with the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office to determine what charges will be filed.
