County reports 4 deaths, 54 new cases this weekend

<p>Local health officials on Monday said two inmates and two workers at the Edinburgh Correctional Facility have tested positive for COVID-19. </p><p>More tests are pending, said Betsy Swearingen, director of the Johnson County Health Department. </p><p>A spokesperson for the minimum-security work camp located at Camp Atterbury directed all questions to the Indiana Department of Correction, which confirmed that at least one inmate in Edinburgh has the virus. The state said 48 department of correction employees have tested positive for the virus, but would not say at which of the state’s 21 facilities.  </p><p>The Edinburgh Correctional Facility has 329 inmates and 71 employees, said Bryan Dobbs, spokesperson. </p><p>The Johnson County Health Department on Monday reported four additional deaths this weekend including: two 66-year-old Greenwood residents; a 76-year-old Trafalgar resident; and a 71-year-old Franklin resident, Swearingen said. The county’s death toll is 20.</p><p>The local health department also reported 332 laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. About 1,800 Johnson County residents have been tested for the virus, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. </p><p>The state health department on Monday said the number of presumptive positive cases for COVID-19 in the state has risen to 8,236 after the emergence of 308 more cases.</p><p>The department reported the state’s first case on March 6.</p><p>The state said Monday that the death toll in the state rose to 350, up from 343 the previous day.</p><p>Deaths and positive cases are not always reported immediately, which means the numbers can move inconsistently day to day.</p><p>The state reported that 44,539 people have been tested so far, up from 42,489 in Sunday’s report. The ISDH said the test numbers reflect only those tests reported to the department and the numbers should not be characterized as a comprehensive total.</p><p>Nearby Indianapolis reported 3,012 cases—up from 2,887 cases the previous day. The state reported 123 deaths in the city, the same number as Sunday. The state said 15,482 residents have been tested.</p><p>As for surrounding counties, Hamilton had 490 positive cases; Hendricks, 330; Boone, 109; Hancock, 118; Madison, 261; Morgan, 103, and Shelby, 75.</p><p>Every Indiana county has at least one case.</p><p>Health officials say Indiana has far more coronavirus cases—possibly thousands more—than those indicated by the number of tests.</p><p>As of Monday, 557,663 cases had been reported in the United States, with 22,116 deaths, according to a running tally maintained by health researchers at Johns Hopkins University &amp;amp; Medicine. More than 41,870 people have recovered.</p><p>More than 1.86 million cases have been reported globally, with 115,225 deaths.
